279,094. Stauber, G. Oct. 13, 1926, [Convention date]. Stuffing-boxes, substitutes for.-Packing for a rotor 1, comprises a ring 4, between which and the rotor a film of liquid is maintained. The leakage passage 6 tapers in the direction of discharge and the pressure in the space 6 tends to lift the ring 4 from contact with the rotor 1, but the consequent leakage flow produces a fall in pressure, whereupon the ring 4 is pressed towards the rotor by the pressure in the space 5, which may be aided by springs. The joint between the ring 4 and the casing 2 is packed by a rubber or other ring, or by a cup-leather 8 held by a ring 7. The ring 4 may be replaced by a sheet-metal ring.
