Stuffing-boxes, substitutes for.-In packing of the type described in the parent Specification, the unbalanced pressure on the movable ring 9, the fin 10 of which co-operates with the surface of a collar 5 on the shaft, is balanced by admitting the pressure fluid through passages 19 to cups 17 secured to the ring 9 by stems 18 or otherwise. The rims of the cups 17 are level with the fin 10, and their total effective area is greater than the unbalanced area of the ring 9. The latter is carried by a ring 11 having enlarged rounded edges clamped to the casing and to the ring 9 by rings 13, 14. In a modification the ring 11 is replaced by a flexible ring, rigidly secured at its edges, and the rings 13, 14 are formed with overlapping flanges, which limit the axial movement of the ring 9.
