Abstract

Stuffing - boxes, substitutes for; cooling.- In rubbing-collar for rotating shafts of the type in which one of the rubbing surfaces is carried by a flexible sleeve or diaphragm, the packing is acted on by an adjustable spring. A ring d of fibre or antifriction metal is secured to a sleeve k by a nut l engaging a pin m. The sleeve is carried by a rubber ring e, clamped between parts f, h of the casing, and secured to the sleeve by a nut i. The sleeve is pressed towards a collar c on the shaft by a spring o adjustable by a nut p. The fluid pressure on the flange, of the sleeve k is partially or wholly balanced by the pressure on the diaphragm e. The diaphragm may be replaced by a flexible corrugated metal sleeve. In a modification the sleeve k is secured to the shaft by the flexible ring and bears on a shoulder on the casing, which may have a cooling jacket.
