Stuffing-boxes, substitutes for.-In packing of the type comprising co-operating radial surfaces on a. member 4 rotating with the shaft and a non-rotating member 8, caused to follow the axial movements of the shaft by engagement between collars 9 on the shaft, the axial pressures on the member 8 are approximately balanced. The member is formed with a cylindrical portion, passing through a stuffing-box 11 in the casing- wall 2, and having an external diameter intermediate between the inner and outer diameters of the packing surfaces. The latter may be plane, or the non-rotating member, or both mem. bers, may be formed with annular packing- flanges 7, 5. The packing flanges are arranged to make the total pressure in the packing gap approximately equal to the axial thrusts of the live steam and atmospheric pressure on the member 8. The members 4, 8 may have two or more pairs of co-operating packing surfaces, through which the steam tends to pass in series and radially outwards. The member 8 may be in two parts adjustable by means of a screw in order to vary the clearance.
