Abstract

444,814. Stuffing - box substitutes. ESCHER WYSS MASCHINENFABRIKEN AKT.-GES., Escher-Wyss-Platz, Zurich, Switzerland. Sept. 26, 1934, No. 27627. Convention date, Oct. 4, 1933. [Class 122 (v)] A labyrinth packing for turbine &c. shafts comprises a stationary segmental carbon ring 5 and a rotary toothed member 2 of which the teeth 4 may extend into grooves 7 in the carbon ring. The latter may be rigidly supported in its housing 6 or supporting springs 11 may be provided. Adjacent packing surfaces may be conical and one of the packing members axially adjustable whereby the radial clearance may be adjusted. Should the parts come into contact due to relative expansion &c. the teeth 4 cut grooves in the carbon which assist in the packing action. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 266,361, [Class 122 (v)].
