Stuffing - boxes, substitutes for.-Packing for a turbine diaphragm &c. comprises packing teeth 11, preferably in the form of a spiral, coacting with a, carbon ring 9, secured in a holder 10. The latter is preferably of U section and may be secured by means of an L- shaped flanges 18 on the holder engaging a groove in the casing and secured by a plate 20. One side of the holder may be removable. The carbon ring is preferably formed in segments with overlap joints and the holder may be in halves.
