Abstract

257,330. Clarke, A. W., and Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Co., Ltd. May 26, 1925. Stuffing-boxes, substitutes for.-Relates to packing for turbine diaphragms &c. of the type described in Specification 225,936, in which axial packing fins 21, 22, Fig. 3, on one member coact with radial fins 23, 24 on the other member, and' consists in securing the packing 21, 23 in axial grooves, instead of in radial grooves. The packing may be secured in its groove by deforming it by means of a punch inserted through radial passages 8, as described in Specification 161,259. Alternatively, the packing may be secured by means of caulking strips in the groove, one above and one below the packing. In this arrangement increase of clearance due to wear is compensated for by placing both caulking strips above the packing. Alternatively the packing may be secured by a radial flange 30, Fig. 7, the packing being in halves and threaded endwise into the groove in the diaphragm 1, also in halves. The packing may have two flanges 31, 32.
