Stuffing. - boxes, substitutes for. - In labyrinth packing comprising sheetmetal rings a, Fig. 3, the rings a are made in segments and are secured, without caulking, in undercut grooves by means of retaining - pieces b, The grooves may be undercut at one or both sides, or may be of dovetail section. Adjacent packing strips may be formed integral and embrace the retaining-pieces b. In securing the packing in the stator, the retaining pieces b are threaded in at the joint in the packing-box, while, in mounting the packing on a shaft, the retaining-pieces are threaded through an axial slot h, Fig. 11, in the shaft. The groove is undercut at i to secure final retaining-pieces b and spacing and locking pieces f. In a modification, the undercut is made shallow, Fig. 8, so that the retaining- pieces b can be inserted through the mouth of the groove. The undercut may be bevelled, or rectangular. In securing the packing on a shaft, the retaining-piece which is inserted last is made in two pieces e, g secured by a locking-piece f.
