286,449. Carter, C. W., and Thomson, E. A. Feb. 25. 1927. Packing, metallic, for stuffing-boxes, for example, applied to a refrigerator compressor, comprises alternate split or solid rings 1 of hard metal and solid rings 3 of soft metal, the engaging surfaces of the rings being so inclined that end pressure by means of the gland 8 or otherwise press the soft metal rings inwards, whilst at the ends extra, soft metal rings 7 are provided having the bevelled surfaces reversed, and with sealing spaces 7a. A dividing member 6 may be arranged as shown.
