Abstract

284,133. Banks, W. J. June 11, 1927. Piston packing.-A split ring d has a bevelled surface engaging a wall of the groove, in order to restrict expansion. The ring d is located by a split ring e, the ends of which are locked together, and the groove b is deepened beneath the ring e, in order to permit engagement of the ends of the ring e when inserting the packing. In order to prevent collapse of the packing, radial grooves may be formed in the sides of the rings d, e or in the walls of the groove, to admit fluid to the back of the packing. Alternatively, annular grooves h may be formed in the ring e, or in the ring d. In the latter case the grooves may be proportioned to permit additional expansion to compensate for wear.
