Abstract
250,296. James, W. H. Dec. 10, 1924. Pistons; packing.- In split packing rings of the type in which expansion is limited by interengaging projections and recesses on the packing rings and on the piston, or on undivided rings, the packing rings are prevented from pressing on the cylinder walls, the pressure being taken by the engaging projections and recesses. The split ring c, Fig. 1, has flanges h engaging grooves j in the parts a, b of a piston valve. A stop p in the groove in the part b engages a gap in the flange h opposite the split in the ring, while a plate l secured to the part a engages the split in the ring. A piston comprising heads a, b, Fig. 6, may have a single packing ring with projections engaging holes in the heads, or two packing rings c<1>, c<2> with flanges engaging grooves in the heads and in a solid ring secured between the heads. Alternatively, the flanges may engage floating solid rings s<1>, s<2>, s. The latter may be formed with projections engaging slots in the heads. Specifications 15466/02 and 5549/05 are referred to.
