Abstract

221,909. Isakson, J. E. D. July 12, 1923. Pistons, reducing and equalizing wear of; packing. -A piston 10 is formed with an intermediate tapered surface 14 on which is fitted a ring 20 for taking the piston wear. A single split packing ring, or a pair of packing rings 22, is inserted between the ring 20 and the piston flange 12 and the junk ring 16, respectively. Expansion of the packing-rings is limited by flanges 25 on the rings, which engage grooves in the flange 12. ring 20 and junk ring 16, and the packing-rings have peripheral grooves 27 and radial passages 28 for admitting balancing steam to the back of the packing. Peripheral grooves for collecting water are formed in the ring 20.
