423,981. Piston-rings. GODRON, W. G. G., 11, West 68th Street, New York, U.S.A. May 3, 1934, No. 13444. Convention date, Nov. 18, 1933. [Class 122 (i)] Successive packing- rings 12 ... 15 are provided with byepass passages of different area whereby the pressure drop is distributed evenly over all the rings. Each ring is provided on its upper and lower surfaces with radial channels 27 and 29 respectively. The latter open into a circumferential groove 30 from which byepass passages 31 extend to the outer surface of the ring. The rings 12, 13 and 14 are provided with 3, 2 and 1 of such passages respectively. The rings are balanced in their grooves by permitting pressure gas to pass through axial grooves 20 to circumferential grooves 25 in the working faces. The byepass passage 31 may be replaced by grooves 34, Fig. 6, in the piston wall.
