[Classes 122 (i) and 122 (v)] A packing ring for pistons or rods comprises two segmental rings each segment having axial projections 2, 3 at the ends and middle, and respectively adjacent to opposite edges, adapted to engage corresponding recesses 4, 5, at the middle and ends of segments of the adjacent ring. The middle projections are dispersed at the inner edge of the ring for stuffing-box packings and at the outer edge for piston rings. Piston rings are expanded by short springs disposed in recesses and acting between the projections 3 and adjacent ends of segments. For stuffing boxes the springs are arranged between the projections 2 and the adjacent walls of recesses 4. In a modification, Fig. 5, end projections 17 are spaced from the periphery of the ring and grooves 18 are provided for the expansion or contraction springs. The working faces of the segments may be grooved and filled with carbon. To facilitate assembly of piston rings one segment is provided with an enlarged central recess to accommodate the spaced ends 2 of adjacent segments when the ring is fully expanded, the said segments being grooved at 13 to receive the end projections of the adjacent segment.
