Abstract
246,554. Carter, C. W., and Thomson, E. A. Oct. 27, 1924. Piston packing.-In packing for stuffing-boxes or pistons of the type consisting of undivided or segmental metal rings of V-section contracted or expanded by axial pressure, packing of rubber composition is inserted in the channels of the rings. The rings may be separated by flat washers and mav be of X cross-section. The packing, illustrated as applied to a stuffing-box, comprises rings 2, Fig. 3, adapted to contract on to the rod and rings 3 adapted to expand into contact with the wall of the stuffing-box. The rings are separated by washers 6, and may be divided into two sets by a lantern ring 9, which may be compressible. Springs may be inserted in the packing to secure resilient axial pressure. Alternatively, rings of one type only may be employed, and packing of rubber composition may be placed between the rings as well as in the channels, or the rings may abut by radial surfaces 15<a>, Fig. 10, and have flattened apices 15b abutting on the wall of the stuffing-box. In a modification, Fig. 9, the rings are of X-section. Each ring may be divided by an axial cut, as shown at 12, or by a radial cut, as shown at 13. The spaces between the rings may be circular. Packing of rubber composition is interposed between the parts of the rings, in the spaces between the rings, and in the channels.
