Abstract

285,686. Huhn, G. April 21, 1927. Piston packing. - An improvement in the manufacture of a segmental packing ring described for stuffing-boxes but applicable for pistons, of the type comprising a ring 5 located in a recess in a ring 1, the segments of the rings being riveted together in staggered relation to form engaging tongues 14 and recesses 15, consists in boring the rivet holes 8 in the rings, while assembled, but before division into segments, the rings being then relatively rotated and divided into segments and finally rotated back and riveted together. The packing is compressed by a garter spring in a groove 2, or expanded by an inner spring. Lubricating grooves 12, 13 are formed in the wearing surface spaced from the joint between the rings. The ring 1 mav be of L-section, as shown, or of U- section. The packing may be of metal or of hard rubber or carbon &c.
