459,737. Stuffing-box packing. FREUDENBERG GES., C., Weinheim, Baden, Germany. Nov. 13, 1935, No. 31443. Convention date, Nov. 16, 1934. [Class 122 (v)] An oil-retaining packing-ring of flexible material such as leather, leather substitutes, resin condensation products, &c., is provided with a single joint to allow it to be passed around the machine part to be packed, the joint being offset in the width and height of the packing tc prevent leakage. The packing may have any desired form and cross-section, e.g. cap-shaped or pot shaped, and may comprise one piece or a plurality of layers. Overlapping surfaces may be connected by latex, rubber adhesives, &c. The contacting, joint surfaces may have metallized or graphite coatings. In the construction shown, dished rings c, d are secured together and are split at e, h, f. In a modification, a ring of angle cross-section is housed in a built-up casing and is pressed upon by a helical spring. Expanding, angle rings may be used in the packing.
