Abstract
518,193. Piston peeking ; stuffing-box packing. TRUMMLER, P. Aug. 18, 1938, No. 24367. Convention date, Nov. 19, 1937. [Classes 122 (i) and 122 (v)] A ring packing of U- or L-section is provided with a split insert c having a conical surface co-acting with a conical abutment c<2> and pressed axially by a spring d whereby the insert is pressed radially by wedge action against the joint making limb of the packing. The conical abutment may be formed on the opposite limb of a U-section ring or on the wall of a piston or stuffing box in the case of rings of L-section. The insert c may have a complete conical external surface engaging a conical ring r, Fig. 9, and the spring insert and packing ring may be housed in a casing s, whereby the packing may be inserted as a unit in a housing surrounding a shaft.
