Packing, metallic. - A stuffing-box packing, applicable also as a piston packing, consists of groups of split rings, each group consisting of an outer ring a pressed against the box, an inner ring c pressed against the rod, and an expanding wedge ring b. Leakage fluid collecting in the spaces o tends to press the rings a, c radially and the ring b axially, and thus increase the tightness of the packing. The rings are made of an acute wedge shape in order to be self-locking. A soft ring d or a spring may be placed at the end of the box.
