Abstract

341,771. Stuffing-boxes. MOSEY, H. Y., 14, Balgores Square, Gidea Park, Essex. March 11, 1930, No. 7917. [Class 122 (v).] In packing of the type comprising coned antifriction metal rings 3, 4 separated by a conical ring 9 of brass or steel, the flexibility of the rings 3, 4 is increased by deep grooves 12, 13 in their outer and inner peripheries, respectively. The line joining the grooves 12, 13 bisects the median line of the ring 9 at right-angles. The ring 4 fits the rod, while the ring 3 has clearance from the rod, the bore of the ring 9 being intermediate between those of the rings 3, 4. The packing units are separated by washers 18 of rubber, asbestos, or rubber proofed canvas. The washers may be encased in soft metal. When applied to the compresser of a refrigerating plant, as shown, leakage collected by a lantern ring 16 passes to a jacket 21 in order to cool the stuffing-box. A second lantern ring 17 may be supplied with lubricant under pressure to act as a liquid seal. When used for an ammonia compresser, the neckbush, lantern rings and gland are of steel.
