Boxes; cup-leather packing.-Relates to packing suitable for pistons and stuffing-boxes and shown applied to a stuffing-box and of the type which consists of a series of brass or other metal rings b interposed between a series of pliable rings a made of leather, soft metal, or other material. The rings b are shaped on the inside to receive the cylindrical portions of the. rings a, and on the outside to form a rounded shoulder for the next ring a. Access is provided for a small quantity of pressure fluid to the rings b by means of small clearance spaces b<1> formed at intervals around the rings. A washer d prevents leakage past the exterior of the rings. One or more rings c may be arranged in the opposite direction to prevent air leakage. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 2, the ends of the stuffing-box and gland, and the outer surfaces of the rings are rounded to allow slight deviations of the rod. Leakage is prevented past the outside of the rings by one or more cup-leathers f.
