6788. Harbinger, W. March 21. Stuffing-boxes.-Fig. 1 shows a metal packing placed in an ordinary stuffing-box, but it may be enclosed in a casing secured to the cylinder cover. The packing-rings are pressed longitudinally by rings b, c separated by springs e, the movement being limited by screws f. Two L-shaped rings g, h enclose a packing-ring j made in segments surrounded by a spring k, the joints being closed by inner segments< >j<1>. The packing consists of two pairs of segmental rings u, v and w, x of the section shown, separated by a dividing ring y and enclosed between rings m, n with overlapping flanges connected by screws s working in slots t. One ring, such as v, x, of each of the pairs u, v ; w, x may be made in two parts 18, 19 and 20, 21 arranged as shown in Fig. 3. The ring n bears on a ring 4 with a spherical surface engaging with a corresponding surface on the fixed ring 5. The ring 5 is held in position by the gland 6 and bolts 7. A groove 8 in the ring 5 holds a lubricating-ring. Drain holes 10 are provided in the rings and one 11 in the casing. A modification is described in which the ring 5 is dispensed with, the spherical surface of the ring 4 engaging with a corresponding surface on the gland. A cap is secured to the gland containing a segmental ring furnished with a groove to contain lubricant and held against the rod by a circumferential spring. Only one pair of packing-rings may be used.
