11,879. Barker, R. L. May 13. Stuffing-boxes.-Fig. 1 shows a section through the gland with the metallic packing C in elevation ; the packing in one of its forms is shown in crosssection in Fig. 2. The packing consists of two guide-blocks d with two slide-blocks e fitted between them, all shaped and finished to fit the piston-rod b. Each pair is furnished with springs f, j contained in flanged tubes or sleeves g, k and adjusted by screws h, l. In the form shown in Fig. 4 the packing is pressed against the rod by radial springs o on which rest thimbles n surrounded by a circumferential or belt spring p. Slight modifications in the number and arrangement of the springs may be made in each case.
