Abstract
11,216. Foden, W., and United Kingdom Self-Adjusting Anti-Friction Metallic Packing Syndicate. May 23. Pistons.-Plungers, buckets, and rams of pumps or compressors, &c. are packed by metallic rings expanded by springs acting on conical carrying- rings. In the form shown in Fig. 1, packing-rings A, B, C, D, A<1>, B<1>, C<1>, D', are carried on conical rings 4, 5 which are pressed axially by a spring 6. The rings 4, 5 are mounted on an enlarged part 1 of the rod, forming at its ends shoulders against which the disks or junk rings 2,3 bear. The packing-rings are pressed axially by a spring 7. In a modified form shown in Fig. 4, the junk ring 3 is dispensed with, and a single spring 6 is employed. The packing-rings K; L, M, N, 0, P are mounted on divided rings F, G which are expanded by the cones 4, 5. The ring F is formed with a retaining- flange F.
