Packing, metallic. - Packing for pump and like rods, suitable for hydraulic or other high pressure, comprises internally-coned sleeves 9, 10 containing compound packing-rings R, r, arranged in sequence, abutting together and pressed axially by springs 8 contained in a neck bush 6. The rings R, r are cut in one or more places, and are arranged to break joint. Cupleather packing-rings 16, 15 are arranged to prevent the fluid-pressure from passing between the sleeves to move the sleeve 10 axially, and between the cover 3 and the sleeve 10. An auxiliary stuffing-box 17 is formed in the cover 3, and a drainage space is provided between the bushes 13, 18. In a modification suitable for moderate pressures, the sleeve 9 and packing-ring 16 are dispensed with, and the sleeve 10 is provided with four compound rings.
