Abstract
816,832. Stuffing-box substitutes; pistons, packing. FLICK-REEDY CORPORATION. April 30, 1956, No. 13164/56. Classes 122 (1) and 122 (5). Sealing means for a piston, Fig. 2, or cylinder gland, Fig. 3, comprises a packing of L crosssection in the form of a cylindrical lip for sliding sealing engagement with the cylinder 1 or pistonrod 8, as the case may be, and an annular radial flange which is clamped to the piston or in the gland, an annular space provided in the piston or gland at the periphery of the said flange for collecting fluid tending to accumulate behind the flange, and a relief passage connecting such space with the interior of the cylinder for the purpose of equalizing fluid pressure on both the lip and flange. The piston assembly comprises a piston disc 5, Fig. 2, and followers 6, 7, directly mounted on the piston-rod 4, the flanges 19 of two packing members 20, 21 of cup shape being clamped within recesses 17, 13 formed on the inner faces of the followers. An annular recess 26 is provided in each follower 6, 7 adjacent the inner periphery of the flange 19 and this recess communicates with a relief passage 25. A sealing-ring 24 located in a groove 23 in the rod prevents leakage of pressure through the bore of the disc 5. The piston is assembled by screwing the follower 6 on to the piston-rod, thus clamping the disc 5, the seals 20, 21, and the follower 7 against a distance-piece 10, the forward end of which bears on a shoulder on the piston-rod. The forward end 4, Fig. 3, of the piston-rod is sealed by a gland in the cylinder head 3 comprising a packing lip 30 in contact with the piston-rod 4 and having a clamped flange 32 and a pressure-equalizing passage 46 connecting the pressure fluid inlet 47 with a space 45 formed by bevelling the outer edge of the flange 32. The flange is maintained in contact with the rod by a bevelled ring 42 which is pressed axially by a wavy spring 43. Grit is kept from the working surfaces by wipers 38, 39.
