Packing, metallic; packing, removable casings for; boxes; followers, bushes, and the like; draining.-Packing for piston-rods &c. consists of double rings, each comprising a segmental ring without cod pieces arranged to break joint with another segmental ring having tangential surfaces at the joints covered by cod pieces 14, Fig. 2. Each ring consists of three or more segments and is compressed by a garter spring. Relative rotation of the rings is prevented by a pin 20. A piston-rod may be packed entirely by double rings, or, as shown in Fig. 1, double rings a, b may be placed at the ends of the stuffing-box, the intermediate rings e being ordinary segmental rings. The packing-rings are preferably arranged in recesses formed by discs 1 and distance-rings 2, the whole being pressed axially by springs arranged between a ring 10 and a ring 7 having a flange 7<a>. A box containing supplementary packing may be secured to the gland 21, as described in Specification 6074/15. The supplementary box may be provided with a draining outlet, and a draining passage 22 may be formed in the main box.
