Abstract

508,593. Stuffing - box packing. CARTER, C. W. Jan. 27, 1938, No. 2564. [Class 122 (v)] Metallic packing for stuffing-boxes comprises end rings each consisting of a series of radially relatively-movable segments 6 held by a garter spring 9 against the rod 5 to be packed, and a member disposed between the end rings consisting of two rings 10, 11 having their opposed surfaces bevelled to form a V-section groove 14 in which is disposed a garter spring 15, the two rings slidably engaging each other by means of a spigot 13 on one ring entering a recess in the other ring, the length of the spigot being such that when the rings 10, 11 are fully distended, the spring contracts on to the exposed spigot. The segments forming each ring 6 have abutting surfaces which are approximately tangential to the rod 5.
