Boxes; glands; packing, metallic.-In a stuffing-box for a marine engine or locomotive or for hydraulic machinery, the rod is packed by a series of split rings D, E, F, preferably of white metal, having bevelled surfaces compressed by similar surfaces on the neck bush B and on one or more intermediate rings C of brass or steel &c. The bevelled surfaces of the packing-rings are truncated, so that spaces are left between the rings forming reservoirs for oil and graphite. The packing is pressed axially by a gland G, which may be spring-pressed, and the box may be mounted on a ring making a spherical joint with the cylinder cover. The neck bush B, rings C and gland G are made in halves.
