Abstract

166,142. Leroy, J. E. J. June 12, 1918, [Convention date]. Stuffing-boxes, substitutes for; packing, metallic; packing, removable casings for; cooling stuffing-boxes.-Packing of the labyrinth type, for internal-combustion engines, steam engines and turbines, consists of bronze discs 102, Figs. 1 and 3, formed with projections on each face and contained in rings 101 of L.section. The labyrinth packing may be supplemented by split bronze rings 99, Figs. 1 and 4, with eccentric inner and outer peripheries, and each compressed by a similarly formed cast-iron ring 100. Lubricant may be supplied to a channel 103 in the stuffing-box and pass to the rod through holes 104 in one of the rings 101. The stuffing-box is shown surrounded by the cylinder water jacket 26.
