Abstract
819,860. Pistons. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. May 21, 1958 [May 23, 1957], No. 16302/58. Class 122 (1). A piston assembly for a free-piston engine comprises a compressor piston and power piston 32 having bearing surfaces 81, 82 upon which the piston 32 is rotatable relatively to the compressor piston and which are provided with ducts 96 for feeding oil to the bearing surfaces. The piston 32, which may be of cast iron, is formed with a reduced portion 92 on which is press-fitted a sintered iron or bronze bearing band 58, which has a radial flange 94 contacting a ring 79 on a sleeve 29 bolted to the compressor piston and a sleeve portion 90 in contact with the power cylinder 12. A flange 86, also formed on the piston 32, extends through the ring 79 and a snap-ring 88 thereon retains the two pistons together so that the bearing surfaces 81, 82 are in contact. Cooling and lubricating oil is fed through a pipe 52 into an annular chamber 66 in the piston 32 from which it is fed through the ducts 96 to the bearing band 58. The oil is discharged through openings 74 in an inner sleeve 64 in the piston 32 and a pipe 54, a replaceable baffle 114 being provided, if desired, to partially block the openings in order to regulate the amount of oil in the chamber 66.
