Abstract

718,612. Pistons. SPECIALLOID, Ltd. Feb. 11, 1953 [Nov. 13, 1951], No. 26524/51. Class 122(1) A piston for an internal-combustion engine, particularly a Diesel engine, in which the crown 1 of the piston and the ring belt are cooled by liquid, e.g. oil, conveyed as by a walking-link or telescopic feed pipe 7 preferably from the small end of the connecting-rod and circulated in the piston in a generally radial direction, comprises a ring carrier 12, Fig. 1, clamped between the crown 1 and the body 3 of the piston. The crown is located on the body by a spigot 4 provided on the crown or the body and engaging a recess in the other part, and the parts are secured by bolts 6, screw-threads, or shrink-fitting which may be combined with bolts or screw-threads. Radial channels 8, 9 or one or more scroll channels may be formed in the raised parts of the abutting faces of the crown and the body to convey the lubricant to an annular groove 13 behind the carrier 12 from which it enters axial passages 18 in the carrier through lateral recesses 20 or the open ends of the passages 18 which would otherwise be sealed as by plugs 22 or a pressurefilled sealing ring. The coolant then passes into an annular groove 14 in the body 3 and is drained into the interior of the piston through passages 16. Sealing rings 21 are located at the ends of the annular grooves 13, 14 and pressure-filled sealing rings 23 at the ends of the carrier. In a modification, Fig. 4, the coolant circulates through the passages 18 in the carrier before cooling the crown, passages 24 in the body conveying the coolant to the groove 14 and an annular groove 25 collecting it from the radial channels, 8, 9 in the raised parts of the abutting surfaces and conveying it through at least one further passage into the interior of the piston. If the piston is intended for use horizontally, the drain holes 20 for the lowermost passages 18 may be smaller than the others. In further modifications, not illustrated, only one of the annular grooves 13, 14 may be provided, or the crown or the body or both may be formed with a plurality of scallops. Instead of, or in addition to the scallops in the piston, the inner face of the carrier may be formed with scallops. The carrier 12 may be made from austenitic steel, bronze or aluminium-bronze, cast-iron, heat-resisting steel, copper or aluminium alloys and the body 3 and crown 1 from aluminium alloys or cast-iron. A body of aluminium may be used in conjunction with a crown of cast-iron, austenitic steel, bronze or aluminium-bronze, copper or heat-resisting steel, or the body may be of cast-iron in conjunction with a crown of austenitic steel, bronze, aluminium-bronze, copper or heat-resisting steel. Specification 586,036 is referred to.
