Abstract

1,226,334. Pistons. RICARDO & CO. ENG. (1927) Ltd. 18 April, 1968 [18 April, l967], No. 17850/67. Heading F2T. A piston assembly for an internal combustion engine comprises a crown portion 1, a ring belt portion 2, a piston-rod part 5, and an intermediate member 8 having outer and inner faces 9 and 11 respectively in contact with the crown portion 1 and the piston-rod part 5, the member 8 being of material having a higher coefficient of thermal expansion than material of the crown and ring belt portions and being formed in its outer face 9 with one or more grooves defining with the crown portion a channel or channels for cooling liquid. The crown and ring belt portions are of steel and the member 8 is of light metal alloy. Spiral grooves 10 and 12 are formed in the outer and inner faces 9 and 11 of the member 8, the groove 12 communicating via passages 17 and 15A with spaces 18 and 16 leading to the outer end of groove 10 which opens at its inner end to a return passage 14 in the part 5. The member 8 and part 5 are located by a wedge-section split ring 20 engaging a groove 21 in the ring portion 2 and urged outwardly by a wedging ring 22. In use, cooling oil is supplied through a passage 15 to the groove 12 whence it passes through passages 15A and 17 and spaces 16 and 18 to the groove 10 and is returned via passage 14. The portions 1 and 2 may be integral as shown or may be formed separately and connected, e.g. by brazing along line 25 or by set screws 26.
