Abstract

1,208,536. Pistons. SULZER BROS. Ltd. 4 July, 1969 [8 July, 1968], No. 33875/69. Heading F2T. In an internal combustion engine piston 1 having a ring groove 4 in its head portion 3, the flank 7 of the groove remote from the crown has an annular projecting ledge 8 having an axial thickness B at its free edge which is not more than 0.2 times the width N of the groove. The head portion 3 is slightly tapered and at the top ring groove has a diameter D2 slightly less than the diameter D1 of the piston running surface 2. The diameter D4 of the ledge 8 is not greater than the diameter D1. The ledge reduces the leakage area at the gap in the piston-ring 5. The flank 7 may be chromium plated except in the region of the ledge 8.
