Abstract

1440019 IC engine cylinder heads SULZER BROS Ltd 13 July 1973 [8 Aug 1972] 33549/73 Heading F1B A diesel engine has a cylinder head 1 formed with a flange 10 connected by screw-threaded fasteners 7, 8 to the remainder of the engine, a cylinder liner 3 against an end-face of which the cylinder head abuts and a piston 4 which has an upper end the major part of which is formed by a flat top surface normal to the axis of the piston and which at T.D.C. penetrates into a recess 29 in the head forming the combustion chamber, the lower boundary 25 of the flange being located at or below the level of the top of the piston when at T.D.C. Friction between the abutting surfaces of the liner and cylinder head enables the head to contribute to the support of the upper edge of the liner against radial stresses. Cooling passages. The head is formed with an annular chamber 20 around an insert 18 for an injector, and with passages 21 which connect with a groove 24 around the lower part of the head. The groove is closed by a ring having one or more outlets 16 each connected to a similar groove 15 and closing ring on the liner. Groove 15 connects with passages 12 in the liner.
