Abstract

1406066 Cylinder head cooling SULZERS BROS Ltd 22 Nov 1972 [9 Dec 1971] 53883/72 Heading F1B In an I.C. engine cylinder head, a combustion chamber recess has a peripheral portion with a substantially conical wall 12, Fig. 1 and a central portion 11 whose wall is substantially flat, the central portion having cooling bores 16, Fig. 2 close to its wall and the peripheral portion having a cooling duct system. Bores 14, 16 are connected via bores 17 to chamber 18 and outlet 20. The peripheral portion 12 has oblique bores 21 which connect an external distributing chamber 22 with one of bores 14, 16 chamber 22 also being connected via pipes 26 and header 27 to a cooling bore system for cylinder liner 3. In another embodiment the peripheral portion (62') Fig. 3 (not shown) has a peripheral recess forming a cooling chamber (70) closed by a sealed covering ring, the recess having vertical strengthening ribs (75). In a modification of the latter embodiment the ribs (75) are replaced by a thrust member 80, Fig. 5 which has slots 81 for coolant flow between an external distributing chamber 72' and chamber 70. Bores 8, Fig. 1 for other engine parts may end above bores 14, 16 and communicate with the combustion chamber via round or elongated bores (100), Fig. 6 (not shown) or the intersecting bores 14, 16 may be omitted or the bores may be fitted with a sleeves (110), Fig. 8 (not shown).
