Abstract

1,212,053. Cylinders. SULZER BROS. Ltd. June 20, 1968 [July 12, 1967], No.29468/68. Heading F1B. In a piston engine with an exchangeable wet cylinder liner 1, Fig.1, having a flange 2 clamped between the cylinder head 8 and the block 4, a consequent gap 9 is sealed from the combustion chamber by a seal 10 comprising a ring 11 which bears against coaxial surfaces 14, 15 of axial grooves 12, 13 or of radial recesses (not shown) which open into the combustion chamber. The surfaces 14, 15 and the co-operating surfaces of the ring may be bevelled, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown). At least one of the corners of the ring remote from the combustion chamber may be bevelled, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown). An oversized ring may be pressed into the grooves. The ring may be of welded sheet-metal strip, or it may be slotted or comprise more than one piece. The supporting surface 3 of the block 4 may be flat or slightly conical.
