Abstract
811,254. Joint-making packing. UNITED STATES STEEL CORPORATION. March 20, 1957 [Nov. 29, 1956], No. 9193/57. Classes 122 (1) and 122 (3). Sealing means for a metal liner 16 fitted in a metal cylinder 10, such as a pump cylinder, adapted to contain fluid under pressure comprises packing disposed between opposing shoulders 22 and 24 on the cylinder and liner and subjected to fluid pressure from an external source at least equal to the pressure within the cylinder. The packing comprises two facing resilient rings 26, 27 separated by a lantern ring 25 and having lips urged into sealing contact with the cylinder and liner by hydraulic pressure supplied through a passage 28 in the cylinder. The hydraulic pressure may be provided from a system including a handoperated pump and hydraulic accumulator. The liner has a second shoulder 29 abutting the cylinder end and is held in position by a spacer 17 pressed against the liner by a screw 18 in the removable cylinder head 12. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the shoulder 29 is clear of the cylinder, or it may be omitted, and the liner is located by a second spacer held between the liner and the end of the cylinder remote from the head 12.
