Abstract

848,590. Piston and stuffing-box packing. ANGUS & CO Ltd., G., THOMPSON, E. C., and BROUGHTON, C. June 4, 1959 [June 11, 1958], No. 18652/58. Classes 122 (1) and 122 (5). In a rubber packing ring including an axial flange 3 with a scaling lip 9 adapted to seal against a relatively movable surface 8, for example a cylinder wall, in order to minimise extrusion the flange is reinforced by an embedded rigid member 6 extending from the back 1 of the flange towards the sealing lip, the thickness of rubber covering the member 6 on the side facing the surface 8 increasing from the base of the flange towards the lip. Fig. 1 shows a U-section piston ring, the member 6 being the axial flange of an L-section metal ring. The ring may be of oil resistant synthetic rubber such as butadiene acrylic nitrile copolymer.
