Abstract

1,066,857. Seals. JOHNS-MANVILLE CORPORATION. Nov. 6, 1963 [Dec. 21, 1962], No. 43823/63. Heading F2B. A fluid seal for relatively rotatable parts comprises a U-shaped ring 40 of elastomer material which co-operates with an annular ring 30 of low-friction synthetic resinous material and includes a dynamic lip section 42 having a tapered circumferential surface engaging a tapered portion on the annular ring, the annular ring in operation being extruded towards the dynamic lip. The ring 40 may be provided with a metal reinforcing ring 56 and, if desired, bonded to its casing 20. Preferably, the ring 40 is made of a fluoroelastomer comprising at least 60% by weight of fluorine and the annular ring 30 is made of P.T.F.E. Fluid pressure acting on the seal, it is stated, causes the ring 40 to ride-up the inclined surface of the ring 30, thereby reducing interference on the shaft 50; this movement causes part of the ring 30 to be extruded under the lip 46, Fig. 4 (not shown), thereby imparting the low-friction characteristic to the lip. Fig. 5 shows the seal as provided with a ring 58 stretched tightly over the shaft to prevent excessive extrusion of the ring 30 through the clearance space; also shown, is a securing plate 60. Instead of being mounted as shown for engaging the moving shaft, the seal may be actually mounted on the shaft, Fig. 6 (not shown).
