Abstract

922,643. Stuffing-box substitutes. FICHTEL & SACHS A.G. Oct. 26, 1961 [Nov. 3, 1960], No. 38430/61. Class 122 (5). A high-pressure seal is provided between two relatively reciprocating parts 1, 3 by means of a thin packing ring 5 which is urged by the pressure fluid 4 to be sealed into bearing engagement with a conical surface formed on one of the parts adjacent the gap between these parts and bears by way of an edge against a sealing surface on the other part. The parts 1, 3 constitute the piston-rod and cover of an hydraulic, hydropneumatic or pneumatic damper cylinder 2. The ring 5 is of resilient abrasion-resistant material and is less than 2 mm. thick. When dismantled the ring may be flat with a circular bore. In use the surface of the bore is deformed under the action of fluid pressure so as to engage the rod 1 by its edge adjacent the pressure fluid. Alternatively, the ring may be formed with a conical end surface and a conical bore. At its outer periphery the ring may be formed with a thickened axially directed portion for location of the ring between the cover 3 and an internal shoulder on the cylinder wall. The inner and outer periphery of the ring may be circular or non-circular depending on the crosssectional shape of the parts 1, 3.
