Abstract

1,246,105. Pistons. BAYERISCHE MOTOREN WERKE A.G. 8 Nov., 1968 [10 Nov., 1967], No. 52994/68. Heading F2T. To suppress or minimize piston ring flutter in a piston 2 having at least two piston rings 5, 6 housed in grooves 3, 3<SP>1</SP>, at least part of each of the two contact edges 11, 11<SP>1</SP> between the piston and the second piston ring 6 from the crown and any following rings are inwardly offset towards the piston axis 12 compared with the corresponding contact edges 10 between the piston and the top or first piston ring 5 by bevelled or recessed portions on one or both edges of the groove and/or on one or both outer edges of the ring. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1, the ring 6 has an annular recess 6<SP>1</SP> and the upper edge of the groove 3<SP>1</SP> is bevelled at 2<SP>1</SP> whereby the area of the leakage passage 7, 8 through the ring 6 is about ten times that, 7, through the ring 5. An oil control ring 34 is fitted in a groove 3<SP>11</SP>. In a modification (Fig. 3, not shown), the outer edges (15) of the ring are bevelled only in the locality of the gap (9).
