Abstract

1,120,206. Cooling pistons. WELLWORTHY Ltd. 30 June, 1966 [9 July, 1965], No. 29279/65. Heading F2T. An oil-cooled piston for an internal combustion engine comprises a separate transverse bridging member 10 which spans the underside of the piston crown 1, is secured at or adjacent its ends to the piston as by bolts 11 and carries a pick-up element 15 urged by a spring 16 to engage a surface 17 on the small end of the connecting rod. A passage 13 in the member 10 communicates at its outer end with an inlet port 7 for a spiral oil gallery 9 in the crown 1 and at its inner end with a cross bore 19 and passage 18 in the element 15. A vent 20 in the member 10 is aligned with the outlet port 8 from the gallery 9. In use, engine oil is fed from the connecting rod small end through the member 10 to the gallery 9 where it acts as a coolant and is returned to the engine through the vent 20. In addition, oil may be fed through the element 15 to the cavity under the crown 1 for further cooling thereof.
