Abstract

702,002. Pistons. CROSSLEY BROS., Ltd., and CARTER, H. D. June 25, 1952 [June 27, 1951] No. 15220/51. Class 122 (1) A piston for an i.e. engine is provided above the gudgeon pin bosses, with a set of components consisting of a centre piece B and two side pieces A, C each of which may comprise several parts which are secured together and to the piston crown to provide a shake proof fixture, the components having passages for the delivery of cooling oil to the internal surfaces of the piston wall and crown. The component'B accommodates a thimble e housing a spring f which bears on a ring h having a spherical surface seating on the end of the connecting rod i which has a passage m delivering oil through the ring h into the thimble e, through ports n and passages o to a helical peripheral groove p and thence to the spiral groove q in the top of the assembled components. Oil discharges through a pipe s. In a modification the oil passes from the passages o up vertical grooves in or a vertical space or annulus around the components, then over the top Oil may be supplied independently of the rod i.
