590,006. Cylinders. JULIEN, M. F. A. April 10, 1945, No. 8870. Convention date, June 8, 1943. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi)] In an engine in which the combustible charge is admitted by valves in the cylinder head, the combustion chamber 1 is formed hemisperically and has an opening less in diameter than the cylinder bore so that an annular edge 3 is formed which is closely approached by the piston at the end of its stroke and turbulence is thereby produced. The piston may have an annular baffle which enters the base of the hemisperical chamber to increase the turbulence or be formed with a conical head. Alternatively, it may have a concavity so as to produce a completely spherical combustion chamber. The sparking plug is located near the top of the chamber. The stroke is preferably less than the cylinder bore. The valves are held closed by torsion rods 11 which act partly by torsion and partly by flexion.
