Abstract
816,325. Two-stroke engines. FLETCHER, A. H. CUDDON-. Oct. 29, 1956 [July 27, 1955], No. 21688/55. Class 7(2) A cylinder 4<SP>1</SP> having piston-controlled exhaust ports 7 forms a common combustion chamber 5<SP>1</SP> with, and has a bore 78 per cent to 88 per cent of that of, a cylinder 3<SP>1</SP> having piston-controlled inlet ports 6. The pistons 8, 9<SP>1</SP> are of equal weight and work on intergeared crankshafts 10, 11 of equal throw displaced relative to the respective cylinder axis. The exhaust ports may open at 83 degrees before B. D C. and close at 56 degrees after B. D. C. and the inlet ports open at 52 degrees after B. D. C. and close at 61 degres after B. D. C. thus allowing supercharging. A bore 12 1 for a fuel injector or spark plug is provided. The piston 9<SP>1</SP> may be flat-topped. In a modification, water-cooled vertical or horizontal coaxial cylinders are used, there being opposed bores 12 for two fuel injectors, two spark plugs or one injector and one plug, and a blower for inlet air or mixture. Reference is made to the use of mutually inclined cylinders, of pistons of unequal weight compensated for by crankshaft balance weights, of exhaust ports having an area of opening equal to or less than that of the inlet ports, and of an exhaust piston having a lead of up to 14 degrees on the inlet piston.
