Class 7(ii) A tubular piston 10 sliding between a junkhead 5 and a cylinder 2 of high heat conductivity material such as aluminium or aluminium alloy has ports, e.g. inlet and exhaust ports 14, 15 respectively, near its top end only, and to minimize heat distortion the end wall of the piston acted on by the combustion gases is of plane circular form. As shown applied to a two-stroke engine with crankcase compression of combustible mixture, the junkhead 5 is mounted by a flange 6 having limited freedom of movement in a clearance between the cylinder 2 and a clamping ring 7, and has - a recess 17 to deflect the incoming charge.
