Abstract

593,067. Four-stroke engines. ADAMS, T. HAMILTON-. June 13,1945, No. 14953. Drawings to Specification. [Class 7 (ii)] In a compound four-stroke compressionignition. engine excess fuel is used in the high pressure cylinder and air is added to the exhaust thereof which is mainly Carbon Monoxide in the second cylinder which has a larger bore where it is fired by an electric spark or hot wire to produce Carbon Dioxide. After the exhaust stroke in the second cylinder the exhaust valve remains open, so that air is drawn in to cool the cylinder. The cylinder head and piston of the first cylinder are preferably made of an alloy containing Chromium, Molybdenum and Carbon-free iron, examples of which are given, which conserves the heat. The piston and its piston rod are preferably cast hollow and filled' with aluminium. Specifications 513,668 and 567,560 are referred to.
