Abstract

737,714. Pistons. LEYLAND MOTORS, Ltd. May 17, 1954 [May 16, 1953], No. 13780/53. Class 122 (1). An oil-cooled piston for an internal-combustion engine has an annular chamber bounded by the wall of the piston at the ring belt 3 and to which is fed oil from the connecting rod, the oil entering the chamber near its top and leaving through openings 21 lower down, but above the bottom of the chamber, which exhaust the oil into the cylinder. The oil passes through axial passages 15, 18 and annular passages 16 in the connecting-rod into the bore of a sleeve 11 pressed by a spring 13 against the connecting-rod. The spring bears against a collar or spider 12, at the end of the sleeve 11, and against the end 8 of an insert 6 which forms the inner wall of the annular chamber. Passages 19 in the end 8 of the insert 6 provide access for the oil to the annular chamber, and one or more passages 22 provide access to the space between the insert and the crown of the piston. Ribs 7.may support the insert.
