Abstract

827,193. Cooling pistons. LARAQUE, R. May 9, 1956 [May 9, 1955], No. 14452/56. Class 122 (1). An internal-combustion engine piston comprising an inner part 1 carrying the gudgeon pin bearings and closely surrounded by an outer part comprising a head 2 and a skirt 3 is cooled by lubricating oil circulated through the connecting-rod 20 and through a spiral groove 16 formed in the underside of the head 2 and a helical groove 17 in the part 1. The gudgeon pin 12 is rigidly secured to the connecting-rod by an inner tube 21 and forms with a semi-cylindrical recess in the part 1 a space 13 communicating by an axial passage 14 with a chamber 15 in the head from which the spiral groove 16 extends. The groove 17 communicates at one end with the groove 16 and at the other end with the gudgeon pin bearings. The lubricating oil is supplied through the tube 21 and passes through space 13, passage 14, chamber 15, spiral groove 16, helical groove 17 to the gudgeon pin bearings whence it returns through an annular passage 19 in the rod 20. The inner part 1 is axially located by a trapezoidal splitring 9 engaging a corresponding groove 8 in the skirt and relative rotation between the inner and outer parts is prevented by a stud 6 on the head 2 engaging a recess 7 in the part 1.
